Dorset, Thousands of proposed extra homes, some near stations Posted by John D at 15:52, 20th September 2025 | ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Recently Dorset Council published its new housing plan, which uses the must bigger house requirements as mandated by new Labour Government
Seems quite a few are near stations, about 4500 homes near Moreton, hundreds near Wool, Gillingham, Sherborne etc
Lots of other expanded (or almost small new towns) adjacent to railways. And some where railway is no more, Sturminster Newton, Corfe Mullen, Bridport etc.
The map on link is interactive, you can zoom into the red areas, and click on them to see proposed number of houses etc for each site.

Wiltshire plan was started before the Government increased target number of homes (although if it isn't agreed, might need to re do it with revised target). I think Somerset is still to issue updated housing plan (as catching up from the merger of its planning areas). BANES seem to be aiming to meet targets just adding thousands of apartments along former industrial sites alongside old approaches to Green Park station.
Looking at map of Dorset, bit of a shame can't build a short simple single track branch from between Hamworthy and Holton Heath through the proposed Lytchett Matravers and on northwards to join the old Somerset and Dorset trackbed via the massively expanded Sturminster towards Blandford. Looks like there is a case for a Dorchester North station on existing line too (between Dorchester West and former Bradford Peverell)
What I do find interesting though, is how poor some of the A and B roads are to serve some of the proposed sites, so you do wonder how some people will be expected to get to work. But of course Dorset was once rural and has never really had any quality east-west route, railways that have been singalled for miles, A roads that have bits of dual carriageways that don't join up, and zero motorways.
